Google is adjusting how Android is made, with the AOSP branch moving behind closed doors, leaving the entire OS to be privately developed.
Define many as a percentage of ~8 billion+ humans with smartphones or thereabouts
That’s a ridiculous metric. Not every human has and uses a smartphone. Not all of the ones that do use Android. Not all the Android users use Lineage. The only percentage that makes sense is that of total LineageOS users.
OK, what is the better metric? I’m not trying to gotcha really, but I use tap and pay and my banking apps very incredibly often and would not consider a phone where I couldn’t, and suspect that it is a significant driving factor for others as well.

I’ve used Lineage, and Cyanogen before it, it worked fine for me. Doesn’t work out for you, and that’s ok, because you have options.
