English is a Germanic language that got French shoved into it while stealing a little Norse. It was introduced to the printing press / movable type in the middle of a major vowel shift, and instead of adapting those tools to the language, major players at the time squeezed the language into an alphabet type that was already available.
You might as well consider voiced and unvoiced “th” one phoneme in English, there’s like 1 or 2 pairs or words that actually depend on the distinction
