Just made an account here ten minutes ago. The format feels weird but it’s nice to be able to continue talking like sensible people without getting banned for it. Feels good, man.
Check out lemmyapps.com for different apps and webUIs. There is even sm old reddit style clone like old.lemmy.world for example.
If you used to use the Apollo app for Reddit then I strongly recommend Transit. It looks and feels a lot like Apollo, but for Lemmy.
And for former Relay users, Summit will feel pretty familiar.

Happy you could join! You’ll find that not only are bans much more reasonable, but conversations are frequently downright pleasant. Aditionally, there are communities built just for calling out mods that abuse power or are heavily biased. The system here is working much better from a user perspective.

If it’s any help, I use the sync app on android. I also used sync for reddit prior to the API thing which finally made me leave, so my experience is pretty much the same in terms of format. I agree it can feel weird in a browser but there’s a bunch of good mobile apps that might feel more familiar.
Just FYI the dev abandoned the app and core features still break when the new instance updates take place. Not to mention:

I will say, DO NOT use Sync or Boost, both are abandoned. Voyager is FOSS and adapts to updates.
I’ve been using using Sync since it was Sync for Reddit and the developer is known for flurries of updates followed by radio silence. So it’s not unusual for him. It is closed source so if he ever disappears forever it will probably eventually break. But it’s a great app.
I’ve read that elsewhere too, but he never took over a year up update. I think this was too much work for not enough pay.
Voyager doesn’t allow users on dbzer0 which is such a disappointment.

Some apps allow people to sign in on them, but only for certain servers.
I just checked, and while it isn’t in the new account list, it is in the login list in Voyager. And, also, you can just type any url into the login form in Voyager if the server isn’t listed.
That’s awesome! I tried doing that and it went to trying to sign me up for a lem.ee account, which was annoying.

Start with with a simple distro that feel comfortable for you, don’t go crazy, but have fun with it! Btw, I use Arch.
This place got me to give it a second try (xkcd caused the first like a decade ago).
Main suggestions: pick a distro on your priorities (starting with arch is a meme for a reason, most people just want a computer that just does what they want easily, Linux can do that nowadays and you’ll have the freedom to mess around with terminal if you want) and keep in mind you may need to do some things a little differently like using a different program, but unless you’re using cad it’s unlikely to be an issue
I don’t hate windows as much as a normal linux user would tell you, but linux is honestly pretty nice. At least the very popular distros that “just work” with most software you’d need. Obviously if you need something that’s windows only then you’re SOL

Redirects queries for “reddit.com” in your url bar towards your own computer. And unless you literally are reddit, you won’t reply to yourself, the result being that you’ve blocked the website for yourself.
EDIT: I prefer to use 0.0.0.0 instead, so I’ll continue to ignore myself even if I do become Reddit in the future. Gotta be cautious.

It uses 0.0.0.0 for tens of thousands of bad domains, so I use this as my baseline on my systems.
It’s a DNS file specifically for your computer. It just returns 127.0.0.1 as the IP address of Reddit, instead of it’s real IP

I’m on .ee and its pretty nice. They do federate with hexbear and lemmygrad, which could be a problem. lemmy.zip and lemmy.ca are both nice instances as well.
Is it possible to join an instance but filter out specific federated posts? Like I would like to join an instance like that but filter out hexbear… a little too psychotic for my taste.

Funny enough. I just joined like 10 minutes ago. As someone whose been on reddit since 2008! I’ve finally had enough when my 15 year old account started getting permabanned just for understanding why people like Luigi exist. And getting banned all over because of one comment. Then I saw another post this morning talking about alternatives to reddit and how someone else started getting banned for just about the same reasons. Then I and came across this platform. And it seems very promising at first glance. I’m m very hopeful it can make its way. Reminds me of the older days of early Internet.
I’ve been here for 12d now and feddit hasn’t lost it’s charm. That feeling of how the internet was before the big companies is so refreshing.
