No one would need to directly be paying for healthcare or insurance in order for folks to have good care. In a system that doesn’t greatly reward antisocial behavior and policies is there any reason we couldn’t you know, maybe NOT require folks to pass any kind of barrier, financial or otherwise, in order to get care? The problem is not just that it’s done for profits. Even if all insurance companies had to be nonprofits, as long as we keep doing things this way (the system at large that is not solution focused with the goal of meeting needs effectively and responsibly, but is instead profit driven) they would still have to deny claims to remain afloat.

Also, don’t pretend you give a shit about people suffering or not receiving adequate care when you’re an apologist for fucking UHC and Mr Dead CEO.

We have invented the need for insurance, the need for an intermediary who does not have medical expertise or training to be involved in decisions about healthcare. This is not a net positive in any way. A single denied claim makes it a negative. The millions of deaths caused by insurance companies were largely preventable. For everyone keeping score at home, that does appear to me to be what we call a “net negative”, unless they provide some incredible benefit that somehow wipes that all away.

Gentle reminder that not everything needs to be gendered and (especially on Lemmy) there are lots of folks who might be put off in some way by this, because it feels very much (at least to me) like something (particularly white cishet) dudes say to each other and not something that applies to folks of all genders and communities, like “friend” for example. Not trying to imply that you are any of those things (even someone who is okay being called dude, I’m not calling you that, intending to be giving a vibe on the statement without judging you) just that that’s what I think of when I see that and I wouldn’t necessarily mind if someone said it to me (especially in person; I’m currently masc presenting at the least, not sure yet where I actually land) but thinking of others who might feels like something that happens on Lemmy that differentiates the community at large from reddit.
