As a result, our instance https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/ got 625 new user registrations (of which 536 where accepted) in the past 24 hours! And the registrations are not abating even now. We still get like 10 new ones per hour!
I suspect this is probably the largest advertisement, for lemmy specifically, since the main reddit blackouts 1.5 years ago.
Have your own instances also seen an influx of new users?
Welcome!
I tried to join dbzer0 and got rejected without any reason—did I pick the wrong pirate (I liked Rackham on Black Sails)
I was accepted, and my pick was Jean Lafitte. High seas pirates are allowed but maybe because I picked a real one and you picked a character! Try again.
Rackham aka Calico Jack was a real pirate tho
The current Lemmy UI doesn’t display the reason. use https://t.lemmy.dbzer0.com/ to login and you should see the reason. In any case, please join our appeals channel (it’s in the sidebar) and we can sort you out.
Thanks, will do
Excellent pirate choice!
But are they seeders of leechers?
Yes surprisingly. I haven’t advertised at all yet, but we had 8 people join.
Congrats! Wish you success.
Nice!
And to answer your last question, yes. Jlailu is having an influx of new users coming mostly from r/France. From what I’ve read they’re coming after the r/whitepeopletweets (or something like that) ban.
Out of the loop here…what is /r/whitepeopletweets? And is it as racist as it sounds? Kinda seems like the type of people you don’t get excited for coming over here if they banned the community.
Nope nothing about race, the name was just an answer to blackpeopletwitter, which is the same idea. Posting screenshots of funny tweets.
There’s one here on lemmy !whitepeopletwitter@sh.itjust.works
From what I’ve read the sub got ban after mods took time to delete violent comments about DOGE employees. Their names got leaked, peoples started to say dumb shit, often violent. Musk threw a fit about it and Reddit banned the sub.
Making death threats is obviously a good reason for a ban but apparently the reason Reddit gave (unmoderated sub) was false as there’s screenshots of the post being actively moderated with plenty of deleted messages. But it’s those kind of posts with 18k comments so I guess it was moving too fast for the moderator team.
I might be wrong, I just read about that from the r/france post our refugees came from. I did not explored in detail as it’s on Reddit and I just don’t care 🤷🏻♂️
How much did spez care about violent rhetoric coming out of the donald for years before finally doing something about it. What a pos that fuckface is
As far as I recall it’s about blatantly “white” tweets, to underly how clueless and detached from reality they are.
But it may have warped into the stratosphere as of these days…
Oooooooooh, you mean like in 2001 when I was dating my first ever black girl. I was talking about how you never have breakfast foods for dinner. And she asked if I wanted chicken and waffles. I had never heard of such a dish together. I thought she was asking for two different meals, and it was weird to phrase it like that. After some back and forth, she assured me you take fried chicken, serve it WITH waffles, and cover the whole thing in maple syrup. I thought she was pranking me. So I went over, and googled it. I was suuuuure she was messing with me. Nope. It’s a real thing people in the south do. I’m from Ohio. So was she, but she has family in Atlanta. I was just…why? Just why would anyone mix those foods? Still to this day I don’t want it.
Then, after it had been well established that chicken and waffles was a thing, she asked “Have you ever heard of chitlins?”
I had not. Ignorance is bliss.
Yes something like the first thing popping in your mind when it comes to being blissfully unaware of the struggle of racism being tying together a black partner and fried chicken.
Nice!
There was a post by @inlandempire@jlai.lu on !growthefediverse@slrpnk.net about it
Guess I am one of the 536 newbies hahahaha!
Guess I am one of the 536 newbies hahahaha!
Welcome my friend! Spread the word around. Be part of the resistance!
Yes, trying my best to spread the word!
So, what’s your take on all the Lemmy.ml drama? What do you MEAN you don’t know what I’m talking about??? Is this your first day on Lemmy or something? Oh, it is? Oh.
Ignore me. I’m making bad jokes.
Welcome!
Welcome to Lemmy!! We are called Lemmings over here! Or whatever you want really. I may have drank too much beer.
Fwiw, I prefer Fedizen, bc it works for other things too like Mastodon, Mbin, PieFed (where I’m typing this from btw), Friendica, etc.
But yeah, where you are, Lemming works too I suppose.
Hello fellow Fedizen!!!
Hello! Now let’s go grab a beer… 🍻
I like fedizen too, and threadiverse for lemmy, mbin, piefed, etc. (or when accessing the threadiverse through friendica, hubzilla, etc.)
Threadiverse does sound to me too much like Threads… but that’s dead anyway so meh, whatever, Threadiverse it is then! (Especially since iirc our usage of it predated that of Threads anyway)
And Fedizen makes me feel so… responsible? 😎
Now have a beer: 🍻😄
Thank you fellow lemming!
Your username implies the existence of a lesser, regular jimboomba.
We are called Lemmings over here!
Lemminators
Welcome! Happy to have you!
Welcome! How are you liking Lemmy so far?
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE LINUX DISTRO
And why is it Arch
pshaw, NixOS, Arch is too easy.
We’d use Branston beans, but not gonna lie that looks shit hot. Would scran with a bottle of 8% cider.
I thought Heinz was the gold standard in the UK. I must try the Branston ones. Flippin’ love that pickle.
Don’t think I’ve ever seen them in the supermarket in Ireland but my sister’s visiting from the UK on Sunday so I think I’ll place an order.
I find Heinz beans a bit watery. I prefer the supermarket own brands to Heinz… Branston’s are much better and tastier, with a thicker sauce. Still, YMMV and all that jazz.
Oh, I forgot an annoying trivial issue: the Heinz cans don’t stack up well (lock into place with one can on top of another).
That non stacking thing annoys the piss out of me haha. It’s such a small thing and it’s deliberate to make the tin look bigger but it just means they’re taking up more space in the cupboard for lack of stacking or falling over if you do.
Also not a huge Heinz fan. Like they’re not bad don’t get me wrong but definitely agree on the watery-ness.
The most popular one here is probably Bachelor’s which has a thicker, richer sauce though I’m fond enough of the Lidl own brand one. That is definitely partly down to price. They’re ridiculously cheap and very decent with a fry especially if you warm them slowly to soften them.
I’ll have to try Bachelor’s beans the next time I see them, as well as Lidl’s own when I’m near their store.
Now, what’s this thread about? Oh, yeah, pirating beans. That’s it. ;)
There are two Lidl beans. The extra 10p for the ring pull one gets you more than just the convenience. :) Worth trying both though.
Yaaarrrrns.
Welcome !
Welcome! If you have any questions about the fediverse or piracy in general, feel free to post or shoot the community some questions in this thread. We’re glad you made the switch!!!
Was it taken down? I don’t see it. Why was it being promoted in the first place and how was it not immediately banned? I thought reddit banned anything lemmy related.
You don’t see the link I posted?
Nvm. Completely missed the small “www.reddit.com” under the post. Didn’t realise it was clickable. Thanks!
It’s link/instance dependent. Another strength of the fediverse
Hopefully at least half of them stick around; the MAU count is much more impactful in terms of post frequency and variety than the total number of users in general.
Every reddit shock, more people register on lemmy, as it’s the only valid alternative, then around 10-30% of those stick around. The more reddit enshittifies, the more shocks it will experience until a tipping point is reached.
The latest one only got weakened by reddit panicking and rolling back their “bug”. My suspicion is the next time they will try to enforce it, they will first make sure all lemmy links are banned.
They cant ban them all more will always pop up, fediverse Is like hydra
The only link that doesn’t work for me is lemmy.world.
Is that link (lemmy.world) banned reddit wide?
Isn’t .world the most populous instance? Hmm…
This is interesting. I get the impression that some admin/mods truly don’t understand how the Fediverse operates. They ban one (or a few) instance name(s), but there are so many more that they might not even recognize as Lemmy links, which get past the radar.
At the same time, there are fears here that .world could become disproportionately powerful compared to other instances, due to its high user count.
So in a way, Reddit blocking traffic to .world while permitting links to other instances can benefit us all. Smaller instances gain users, which is an important step toward balancing things out and keeping any one instance from becoming too powerful. Thanks, Reddit!
(I recognize the irony of saying this while having a .world account. I wasn’t aware of its standing in Lemmy when I made it. I am also still learning the Fediverse myself and don’t know how to transfer my account to another instance yet.)
I just read another comment (not sure if in this thread or another) saying that lemmy.world and lemmy.ml links are banned on Reddit. No idea if it’s really true or not though.
They are helping us load balance.
Yeah, it either errors out or hides your comment if you link it. Other instances are fine (excpet for .ml)
For a while I was reading and posting on Lemmy, but still going over to check things out on Reddit (without an account) because Lemmy just wasn’t getting enough traffic to keep interesting posts popping up. I’m having to do that less and less these days.
Honestly I never have to do it unless I’m extraordinarily bored and have nothing better to do.
I think you’re probably right about that. I’ve always said the next big migration will be when they turn off old.reddit, but perhaps they’ll be wise enough to blanket ban links to all the largest Lemmy instances by that point.
Lemmy really needs to buy ads on Google. I know…Google is just awful.
But doing a search for “reddit alternatives”, the first result is reddit.
I’d be willing to chip in some money to get that going.
Who is ‘lemmy’ though. Without someone making money there is no motivation to do that.
All of the biggest instances could take turns running ads for themselves lol
If they have extra money spend some on ads? Prob better to improve seo somehow
when they turn off old.reddit
If they do that I’ll open a reddit account just so I can leave reddit again. 😤
There’s still a lot of old, useful and informative posts on Reddit that I find via a Google search. It annoys me that whenever I find one of those posts, I have to go and edit the URL to be old.reddit instead of www.reddit otherwise it’s so hard to use. Like, the useful thing is in the comments, but the comments are collapsed by default, so if you search for something you won’t find it until you expand those comments.
If they get rid of old.reddit I think I’m going to end up using the wayback machine to get that old post rather than trying to use that horrible new reddit interface.
Instead of manually editing the URL you can use an add-on like this: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/old-reddit-redirect/
Agreed. New Reddit is terrible. I find having to flip to different pages to get to deeper replies particularly annoying.
Even if they don’t stick around they probably know that the days of reddit allowing stuff like piracy and rom resources is coming to a close, so even them just seeing lemmy as a fallback plan to keep in mind is a positive move in the long run.
Holy shit! Nice!
And haven’t noticed instance specific influx but recently there are a lot of users posting/commenting that have the “baby badge” on Voyager app, meaning the account is new. Feel like this influx of new users already started last week.
Haven’t been on reddit since I deleted my account during the blackouts / API fiasco and man, Lemmy/Fediverse has been fun.
On PieFed it looks like a still loading icon. At first I thought my account wasn’t “finished” or something!:-P
YES I fuckin love the 👶 emoji on Voyager! There’s been a lot more and they make me smile inside like little 🌱s on FFXIV. Do other apps have them to indicate new users?
Not sure, but I’d also like to know. Sounds like a great feature!
This makes me want to switch but I’m ride or die Sync. I just manually look up the account age when I see someone spewing absolute bullshit. That icon would be helpful! How long does it last?
It’s there for new accounts created within 30 days!
It’s weird how people smell babies, and are like “smell that baby! It has baby smell!”
But at some point they stop. I’m 41, and nobody ever lifts my shirt and smells me.
You just go to the wrong bars man, or so I’ve heard
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hexadecanal
(…) In 2021, inhalation of hexadecanal was found to reduce aggression in men but to trigger aggression in women. Hexadecanal is one of the most abundant substances emitted by human babies from their heads, which may be an evolutionary survival mechanism to induce mothers to defend the baby and fathers to not attack it. (…)
What fathers are attacking babies???
remembers the world we live in
Oh, right.
Is there some infographic or image that explains how lemmy works? It may get confusing for new people. Even myself, I have been sort of “out of” lemmy and I don’t remember how tagging or linking instances works anymore. It would be nice to get an image that explains those things to just post around for new users…
Please, don’t take this the wrong way, seriously:
I find that quickstart entirely useless. How to create communities is already pretty self explanatory, as there is a button for “Create Community”. The same goes for Search.
I think an image/infographic with things like “how to link users?”, “how to link communities?”, is much more useful, as there are no quick ways to find that out, i.e., no buttons.
That’s how you link communities. As long as that community is batman@lemmy.world. See how the second time it wasn’t a link? You need the !
On Voyager, one is a mailto link hehe.
Makes sense as the app has no way to know if it’s an email address or not
Thunder interprets both as communities, probably because a mistyped community is much more likely than a random email address.
No worries, you make a good point.
For your question, this post https://lemmy.world/post/8505771 is probably better (from !newtolemmy@lemmy.ca )
Couldn’t imagine a piracy community on reddit feeling good about its future.
Reddit will literally change its rules to get rid of communities it doesn’t like. They did it with DarkNetMarkets.
Noice
Everyone remember to be kind to the newbies, not assume that they immediately understand for the fediverse works, and not to talk about your favourite Linux distro until the second date
Teach them about beans.
And jeans
And how to hold your poop in for a few days for… reasons.
I was there. In the ancient times.
You were there when the ancient texts were written, but remember, some of us were there when the alphabet was conceived.
Thank you for keeping Lemmy lore alive, you’re doing god’s work.
Second date? I’m getting a date out of this now? Oh. Oh man. This is intense! I didn’t even know she LIKED me! Wait…I don’t even know who we’re talking about!!!
You haven’t been assigned your fediverse girlfriend yet ?
Nicole the Polish girl from Toronto is my fediverse girlfriend, damnit. Get your own.
“The fediverse chick!”
Oh good. It was just mass spamming. I was very confused when I got that same message from 3 different accounts, but it was the same message with the same links. I thought I was being targeted.
Yeah I got a whole bunch for whatever reason.
Username checks out 😅
What were you saying about Slackware? Who said Slackware?
No, I said, “I like the slacks you’re wearing.” They would go nicely with a red hat.
M’lady. tips fedora
Oh please honey, you gonna scare them. Now kids, welcome to Lemmy! Take a minute to visit and make yourselves confortable. Tomorrow I’ll show you my Nobara.
Why would you go on a date with someone if you didn’t know their religious opinions (favourite init system)???
The entire point of c/piracy is sharing freedom. Why would you not talk to people about Linux? (plus the torrenting tools are just so much more efficient there…)
It’s a joke on how off putting the computer nerds can be here to normies.
I mean, they’re normies… anything that’s not just a one-step process buttoned as “App” is going to give them “off putting vibe”.
And this is why lemmy can feel unwelcoming lol
I can talk about Linux distros on my date? But I don’t have any dates. Oh, right.
Some supermarkets have them
Neelix, is that you?
If they’re coming from Reddit, they probably expect a little negging.
Also maybe try not to harass them about which instance they choose to join (unless it’s a tanky one lmao), just try to educate them if the subject comes up. I think it’s overwhelming to jump right away into “this instance has this problem, you should move to this other one”
I say this still not having moved from Lemmy.world
Is there a problem with Lemmy.world? I joined this one to avoid tankies, but I haven’t gotten familiar with the place yet (despite moderating a community lol).
It’s fine.
The occasional complaint I see is not enough that I’ve considered moving and I don’t even remember what those were. But the great thing about the fediverse is that you can move if you want!
Very dated Lemmy version. LW users still can’t remove their uploaded media
It also blocks Tor, other instances don’t
Besides smaller complaints (every instance has their issues). .world has gotten too large. Many people have suggested that it close its doors for now so other instances can catch up.
I’m not a Lemmy admin, but from what I’m seeing, there’s been an uptick of 4,000 Lemmy registrations within the last 24 hours.
There’s now 477,048 Lemmy accounts.
Whaaaaa??? Last I heard there was like 60k Lemmy accounts total. What the fuck happened since October???
Monthly active accounts vs total accounts: https://lemmy.fediverse.observer/dailystats
What a terrible graph - see if you can spot the 4% daily drop…
Feel free to share if you find a better one!
The data is good - it’s interesting to see the trends - but I just don’t love the layout of how a lot of it is presented
You’re not the first one commenting on it, but it seems like it’s the only graph we have about those stats at the moment.
these stats areee… not the best? fuck i hope we dont fizzle, this better just be the begininng
Discuit has less than 200 commenters : https://isto.pt/pages/transparency
Am I confused, or is that link not a forum?
Sorry, wrong link: https://discuit.net/DiscuitMeta/post/cauipqZt
One of the more commonly recommended reddit alternatives aside from Lemmy. Goes to show how far ahead we are of any other alternative, they all have virtually no activity.
Also note that we bottomed out around 37k in October 2024, so we have seen pretty significant growth since then, and it seems to be accelerating.
Is voat still a “reddit alternative”? When they launched like over 10 years ago that’s how they billed themselves. Then I think their user base was mostly conservative, which might have prevented some people from trying it.
The typical ratio is 1:9:90, meaning only 10% are actively posting or commenting. The Lemmy numbers fit to that surprisingly well, although you would think a few more lurkers would at least vote sometimes (which Lemmy reports as active in the monthly stats). My guess is that the lurkers don’t even bother to sign in.
First time I made an account I fd up the verification question (didnt even look), took me months to make an account again because I was annoyed I couldnt have that username on that instance because I did It wrong.
46K active users is nothing to sneeze at. Most old school forums were hella active with just 1K
It has felt GREAT at lemmy. Lot of content and great discussions. We don’t NEED more people. Yes, more people bring more diversity and that will help a lot. The one downside for lemmy is that it doesn’t have all the niche groups that reddit does but that takea time. Lemmy is maturing amazingly imo.
its a solid size, on reddit there are so many rules and it feels like screaming into a void when no one comments or views your post lol, it was only good for niche stuff, but lemmys cool because niche stuff hits the front page and everyone commenting tends to be helpful or at least they are not actively trying to be negative/unhelpful.
What also bugged me was some subs would delete your post if it was about like a new game so their mods could post it, everyone was so extra about karma that theyd delete ppls posts to post them themselves lol.
leaving reddit led me to some forums that are still active for niche stuff like steakunderwater, lowendtalk, etc. I kind of got used to never leaving that app for anything, didn’t realise how bad the shills were and I just assumed the advice was good like it was a decade ago.
The advice these days is not great, I don’t think most people active there know what they’re talking about and just answer to answer.
Posts and comments are on the rise!
(although the posts are all coming from like 3 people)
@The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world and @MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world, please accept your standing ovations!
:P
Makes me smile to see people recognizing me outside of my Screenshot posts. I didn’t realize that I was known outside of the gaming community I post in though lol
Aside, looks like pixelfed is growing too?
